First Aid Kits

What makes up a good first aid kit? I have been looking online a bit for a guideline of what one should have in a first aid kit. The Red Cross has this for a first aid kit guideline:

• 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
• 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)
• 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
• 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
• 5 antiseptic wipe packets
• 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)
• 1 blanket (space blanket)
• 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
• 1 instant cold compress
• 2 pair of non-latex gloves (size: large)
• 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
• Scissors
• 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)
• 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)
• 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)
• 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
• Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)
• 2 triangular bandages
• Tweezers
• First aid instruction booklet

I’m not going to lie, when I saw this I was a little surprised. I feel like this is probably only adequate if you have a minor issue and will have immediate access to a hospital. I might do something along these lines, but I would want to have way more stock piled. Like instead of 2 pairs of gloves, maybe you have a box or two? Maybe I am being silly. I guess most people would not think about needing more than this, but especially after what has happened in Haiti, I would think the Red Cross would need to re-evaluate their recommendations.

I also feel like there are a bunch of things missing. I found a couple other lists that seem to be a little more complete:

Granted these don’t have actual amounts of each thing, but I feel like that can be figured out on one’s own. I am trying to get together a first aid kit for our home, but am finding I am looking more for a “survival” kit. Any suggestions on something I might be missing…besides potassium iodide tablets for that nuclear blast…

Yikes -I better get cracking this is a long list and we need more than what's on it!
