No Processed Food!

Matt and I watched Super Size Me on Sunday. I had seen it before, he had not. It's on instant Netflix in case you are interested :-) Pretty much is scared the crap out of Matt. At the same time, he was really intrigued with this "30 Days" show, by the same guy that is in Super Size Me. Of course Matt wished he had thought of the idea, and now wants to do his own 30 day challenge.

We decided to do no processed food and no red meat, I'm also going to add in no dairy (i'm a big cheese eater). Don't worry I take a supplement anyways because I am nursing Emma still.

The rules are pretty easy no processed food - no frozen meals, nothing that comes in a box, no store bought granola bars, pretty much anything that isn't a whole food is off limits. That also means no tofu, not that we eat it that much (actually I can't remember the last time I had it), so for meat we will stick to organic chicken and the rest of the pork from our pig in the freezer. It also means no going out to eat which will be a difficult one for Matt and I. And no condiments (mayo, BBQ sauce, ketchup), or butter.

Exceptions are as follows, milk and yogurt and cheese for Matt, and anything that I make from scratch, ie bread and granola bars. I might try to make crackers, but not sure I am that adventureous. Emma can eat as many cheerios as she wants. Coffee and cream for me. Also mustard, olive oil and salsa are exceptions.

Overall I think it will be a large amount of fruits and veggies, and I am really excited about it. I am posting on the blog, because I hope that keeps me accountable. We'll see how it goes of course, no guarantees we will actually finish. Matt might start complaining about not having enough to eat (he seems to do that when I pile a lot of veggies in front of him).

For the next 30 days we will be on a healthy binge, if anyone would like to join in I would welcome it!

Hey Heather, good luck with your 30 day challenge! It's a great idea. You can make your own ketchup if you find yourself wanting it (to dip baked sweet potato wedges in, or whatever... I love spicy sweet potato 'fries'!) - there are lots of good healthy recipes out there on health food blogs etc. And why not make your own salsa with all the goodies from your CSA? I love fresh cilantro in salsa, and if you have a food processor it's easy to make, and so good.

I wouldn't worry about nutrition much from avoiding dairy for a while. If you eat kale, spinach, and other plant sources of calcium some people say you're actually better off than dairy-eaters - I've read that the high protein content in cow milk-based products actually leaches calcium from your bones, for what it's worth. Easy for me to say, because I've never liked cheese much. :)

Good luck, and I will keep checking in on the blog to see how it's going for you!

Thanks for the comment Sarah! I do love making fresh salsa, although I don't expect tomatoes for a while in my CSA (not enough sun up here). I'm with you on the spicy baked sweet potato fries as well. I tend to dip them in ranch dressing...try to make it as healthy a choice as possible ;-)

And the calcium...I have heard that about the greens, and I actually hope that is the case. In Super Size Me there was a little tidbit about an addictive protein in cheese, not to mention it just has a lot of saturated fat that I don't need. I would love to start incorporating a green smoothie into my diet everyday, but I have a hard time with buying stuff from the grocery store. I try to eat as locally and as in season as possible, and sometimes I can't justify buying organic produce if it is from Mexico, you know? I'm hopeful that the challenge works out ok, we shall see!
